Medical Services Plan (MSP) Coverage for Eye Examinations
MSP provides coverage for optometric services for the following general population:
- Children aged 0 to 18 years: One full eye examination annually.
- Seniors aged 65 and above: One full eye examination annually.
- Adults aged 19-64: Eye exams not covered by MSP unless medically required.
In general, medically required services include:
- ocular disease, trauma or injury
- systemic diseases associated with significant ocular risk (e.g. diabetes)
- medications associated with significant ocular risk

Extended Health Coverage for Eye Examinations
- Coverage timeline and amounts may vary based on company and policy
- Direct billing is available for the following companies:
- Pacific Blue Cross
- Great West Life
- Manulife
- Green Shield
- Sunlife
- Standard Life
- Chambers of Commerce
- Industrial Alliance
Please contact our office if your extended provider is not on the list as we provide direct billing for additional companies that may not be listed.
Student Coverage for Eye Examinations
- The examination is provided at a discounted rate of $60 CDN
- Coverage varies based on post-secondary institutions, direct billing is available for students who attend:
- University of British Columbia (UBC)
- British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT)
- Vancouver Community College (VCC)
- Capilano University
- Langara College
- Douglas College
- Emily Carr University of Art and Design
Please contact our office if your post-secondary institution is not on the list as there may be additional institutions which provide extended health coverage with direct billing availabilities.
MHR Disability Benefits (MHR) Coverage for Eye Examinations
- One full eye examination every two years
- One full set of glasses (frame and lenses) every three years
- Lens replacements available after two years with significant change in prescription
- Requires pre-approval for eye examination, please contact our office to provide us with the necessary information to submit for examination and/or glasses
First Nations Health Authority (FNHA / D.I.A) Coverage for Eye Examinations
- Examination and glasses: One full eye examination and glasses every two years
- Requires pre-approval for eye examination, please contact our office to provide us with the necessary information to submit for examination and/or glasses
